About this site

Privacy policy

This page explains what information this site does and does not collect, and what you can ask us to do about it. Reading here requires no account and no personal details, and the site is run as a static publication rather than a service you log into.

No accounts, no sign-up, no details asked for

This site is static: pages are published as files and served to your browser. There is no login, no registration, no newsletter form and no field anywhere on the site that asks for your name, email address, date of birth or payment details. Nothing you read here requires you to identify yourself, and we do not build profiles of individual readers.

Because there are no accounts, there is also no account data to lose, sell or share. If you contact the editorial desk by email, we will hold your message and your email address only for as long as it takes to deal with the query, and we will not add you to a mailing list or pass your details to anyone else for marketing.

Analytics and what a static site can see

The site may use a privacy-respecting analytics tool to count visits and see which pages are read. That kind of tool reports aggregate figures such as page views and referring sites, and it does not identify you by name. We use it to work out which explanations are useful and which are not, not to target advertising at you.

As with any website, the server that delivers these pages receives standard technical information from your browser, such as the request itself and the type of device making it. That is a function of how the web works rather than something we set out to collect, and we do not attempt to combine it with other information to work out who you are.

Cookies, the Privacy Act and removal requests

Cookies are small files a site can store in your browser. This site does not use cookies to track you across other websites, and you can block or delete cookies in your browser settings without losing access to any page here. If you follow a link to our partner's site, that site has its own privacy policy and its own cookies, which we do not control and which you should read there.

We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles. If you believe we hold something about you, for example an email you sent to the editorial desk, you can ask us to show you what is held and to correct or delete it. Make the request using the contact details published on this site, and we will respond within a reasonable time; if you are not satisfied with the answer, you can raise the matter with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

Questions

Do I need to give any personal details to read this site?

No. There is no sign-up, no account and no form asking for your name or email address anywhere on the site. The only time we would hold your email address is if you choose to write to the editorial desk.

How do I get information about me removed?

Contact the editorial desk using the details published on this site and say what you want removed and how we would recognise it. We will deal with the request under the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and tell you what we have done.
